Hello everyone!
For those of you who may not know, I have a crochet shop that I started about a year ago. Thimble & Hook, just to name drop ;) Its still a baby and its still growing. But Ive come across a few issues along the way and also recently about the concept of when youre shopping or selling handmade. Theres a few misunderstandings that I would like to clear up and I hope this post helps some of you sellers and/or buyers.

Its really hard to choose the order of importance for these topics so Im just going to jump right into them.

"Your stuff/items/shop is expensive!"
When you sell handmade, sometimes you get a comment from friends or family or even strangers, along the lines of this. When you shop handmade, you are not just paying for the supplies or shopping at a general store. No. Youre also paying for the labor. And not to mention the sellers artwork. Or the cost and time of running a site, social media, marketing, design, and everything else that goes into running a business. We sometimes dont have anyone else doing that for us.
Its a custom item that even though you might see somewhere else, it is the work of that specific seller and there will never be another just like that one. Ever.
Yes, you can just go to the store and buy something relatively similar for maybe half the cost. However, if it falls apart after a couple uses, you know why. You get what you paid for.
Yes, sometimes supplies arent that expensive (sometimes they are). But would you rather have quantity or quality.
We are not sweatshops. We are individuals who sometimes solely work on these items.

If its handmade, its easy to make.
Do you want to know how long it takes me to crochet a hat? IF I were to sit down, and not do anything else, but make this ONE hat. It takes me anywhere between 30 minutes to 4 hours. Thats IF I were to just sit down and do nothing else. But life doesnt work that way. My body doesnt work that way. My hands started hurting after about an hour. So I take a break. After two hours, they start hurting more so I take another break. After 3 hours, its too painful and sometimes stop for the rest of the day. This does not include each time I have to stop to be human and spend time with my little girl.

"Family Discount"
Keeping the two other subjects in mind, try to understand the frustration when we are asked for a "Family/Friends Discount". Please just dont. We hate saying "no" because 99% of the time, we love what we do. But this is my business. and its disrespectful when my time and effort is not taken into consideration. Yes, it is really easy for me to give you a discount. But if I dont respect and value my shop, others wont either.
Just because youre a friend or family member, does not automatically mean whatever I make is for you. Unless I offer a discount or a free item, youre expected to pay just like everyone else. I wouldnt go into the place where you work and ask for free services or a discount because I know you.
For one thing, I have my own child. And anything I make, she gets the first of. No questions asked. As far as my prototypes go, just because theyre a rough draft, does not mean theyre value is any less. If anything, theyre worth more. Writing a pattern is not easy. It takes ALOT of trial and error and its not something I can just be like "yeah you can have it". The rough draft always takes 2 or 3 times as long to do.

This is the chart I like to use to get an idea of what my items will be priced. Adjustments are made depending on each item.
But just for the sake of knowledge and to give you an estimate....
(I did not make this formula.)
A skein/ball of yarn costs anywhere between $3-8. not including the one pounders.
A basic adult hat uses about half a skein.
Lets do this the cheapest possible way.
2.5(Time) + $1.50(Materials) = 4
$4(Cost) x 2 = $8 (Wholesale)
$8 x 2 = $16 (Retail)
This is the cost for a basic hat.
Now something more intricate like a character hat. Lets do this one for a child.
Most of the time you use multiple skeins for different colors. But you dont use all of it.
3.5(Time) + $3(Materials) = 6.5
$6.5(Cost) x 2 = $13(Wholesale)
$13 x 2 = $26 (Retail)
I dont use this formula to the "T" but it does help get an idea of what my items are actually worth.
So please respect your handmade sellers and their shops. We turned our hobbies into small businesses but doesnt mean theyre valued any less.

Thank you for letting me vent. And have a good day! :)

Xoxo,
Kenia

Hi Lovelies!
Its been a while since I made a post and usually when I make one, I give you stuff for free.
Haha ;) Not that I mind! But I do want to start sharing more of my life and my
planner/planning adventure with you all. So let's begin! :)

Last night...
Or actually the most of yesterday, I spent it redoing my Wellesley set-up.
I recently got her of a Facebook seller and I think Ive found planner peace but I cant
be sure cuz im sure ive said that about half my planners :D
#plannergirlproblems
Anywho! I thought my set-up was fine but it was actually very messy and it slowly but surely
started bothering me. So I re-did it all and now I love it!
I just did it yesterday so we'll see how this set-up goes. Ill definitely keep you updated.

So to start off...
Let me describe a little about how I use my planner. Im a stay at home mom
so i manage our finances, housework, shopping lists, baby stuff, family parties
or events we need to attend and basically manage our whole lives.
I also run two shops! Or kind of three. But I dont want to appear overzealous so
lets say 2! Haha. One is my crochet shop Thimble & Hook. And the other is my planner supply/insert
shop. Thimble & Hook/The Stitch Maker.
I write down my ideas for new products, orders, shipments, all that jazz.
And since I want to be more active on my blog, Im slowly starting to include blog stuff in my planner as well.

Okay. Im done...
On to the good stuff! Heres my current planner set-up in my 2015 Kate Spade Wellesley.
Ive made alot of the things in my planner so if youre interested in anything, feel free
to shoot me an email at kenialouve@outlook.com. :)

Okay so forgive me ahead of time. Lol. Most of these clips were from swaps so I might not
know where theyre all from. So here goes:
Black + Gold Clip: Etsy - mypaperlovestudio
Arrow : Freckled Fawn
Fox: Me ;)
Page Flags: Target
Feather Tag: Target
Glitter Deer Dashboard: Me :)
Cat: Swap but I found these
http://threedogzllc.com/cat-paper-clips-p-346.html
Cupcake:Swap but I found these
http://shop.dcigift.com/p/cupcake-paper-clips
Hello: Swap
Bow: Kate Spade

So In the left pocket I dont keep much. Just the Project Life card as decoration.
In the right pocket, I keep my baby girls immunization card for
doctor appointments and just to have in case of an emergency.

These are currently my sections.
Notes, Lists, Weekly, Finance, Work.
I also have top dividers...
Dump (as in Brain Dump) for random ideas to be organized later.
Ship for my weekly shipments .
To Do, self explanatory. Lol
Behind my dashboard I just keep regular sticky notes.
The small binder clip, sticky notes, and magnet clip on the right are all
from Target.
Hedgehog card from Marshalls. Inside it I have all my personal info
in case my planner ever gets lost.
My business card section! The middle one is my own which needs to be updated.
Designed by me :)
The yarn one is a cool yarn shop I found during the LA Art Walk. And the wolf one I also got at the LA Art Walk but I honestly just put it here cuz it looks cool. Lol
Behind my business cards I have a second dashboard with a quote from my favorite book
and author John Green. It reads "If people were rain. I was drizzle and she was a hurricane." The book is called Looking For Alaska and it completely changed my life.
Heart Clip I got in a swap but I found these on Aliexpress
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Office-supply-XH055-20Pcs-Heart-Paper-Clip-in-a-Heart-Shaped-Plastic-box/470769189.html

I decided on having all my top dividers be glittered. Because, well why not. Haha
This is my "Ship" section. The weekly note list is from Marhalls. I use it to track what Im shipping that week.
I made the envelope from cardstock and its where it houses all my current shipment receipts.
Okay, the first actual section in my planner is my "Notes: section. I like to keep it at the front because that's where I find myself using it more.
I use it whenever I need to write down any Notes of an order for my shop or at
doctors appointments. Questions I need to ask and so on.
Note paper is from Marshalls that was trimmed down.
My Brain dump section is pretty empty right now since its newly added.
Correct me if Im wrong but I think I got the idea from The Reset Girl. I'm pretty sure it was in her YouTube video. But I loved it.
Im very scattered brain so this is perfect for me.
I use a dashboard just to make it prettier.
I painted it myself :)
Skipping the other top divider since it looks the same as the others - my 'To-Do"
section which is pretty self explanatory. Written down is yarn that I need to restock on. Lol
Note paper is from Target.
My second section is my "Lists". Which houses all my passwords, favorites, wish lists, etc.
Note paper again is from Marshalls.
These mini tabs/page flgs I got at the dollar store and I find it easier this way to section off my lists rather than having 20 more dividers. It marks my Wants, Blog Ideas, IG ideas, Shop Ideas, Planner Shop Ideas.
And now the weekly section!
Oh!
Before I forget, I made the dividers myself but you can get dashboard versions on my shop
thimblenhook.storenvy.com
I have them listed in all sizes :)
Arrow clip again from Freckled Fawn.
The inserts I designed myself. You can get the printable on my etsy shop.
thimblenhook
So my weekly section is pretty basic. The Project Life card holds sticky notes for last minute
planning or things that I need to look out for throughout the whole week.
My Finance section is pretty personal so lets skip that :)
My work section is for all my shops and shop related things.
Its currently empty because Im still designing inserts to put in here.
Oh hey! That's my little family ;)
Haha!
And last but not least, My Seven Year Pen. I absolutely love it. I got it in a book shop in Hollywood
completely unexpectedly. We were waiting for a concert to start and I had the pen in my pocket
while I was jumping up and down to the songs. Lol
Its the mermaid version because its the closest thing they have to Ariel and Im obsessed with her sooo
it all fits.

I hope you enjoyed...
This ridiculously long post. And I hope it helps you in someway in your planner set-up.
Its a constant thing that you have to keep at and adjust and find tune to suit your needs and

Hello everyone!
Made some new inserts for you all.
I obviously have a thing for watercolor. I made these because I sometimes dont have time to decorate my pages, and I wanted something bright and colorful that would require minimal decorating for those too busy days. And of course, Im sharing them with you all!
Just on a side note: I spend alot of time making these for not only me but for you too. They're free to download because I know what its like to be on an extreme budget. But I hope you all appreciate the time I spend making inserts for you all. I include a PayPal donation below for those who can and choose to pay a little. Its not required, but any amount is appreciated :) Ive got bills too! Lol

Anyway!
Right now these are only available in Personal size. I know I havent finished making the personal sized lists for the Watercolor inserts but hang in there guys. Theyre coming soon , I promise! :)

Sometimes Cydia doesnt have an icon you want. It happened to me and I searched and searched and couldnt find a decent updated tutorial on how to do it. I finally just mixed some ideas from here and there and figured it out.
Its not an easy tutorial but it isnt complicated either. It just takes a little while but once you get the hang of it, its fairly easy.

This tutorial is using Windows 8.

First things first, youre gonna need a few things:
-Image editing software. (Photoshop, Paint, GIMP, etc.)
-WINSCP (Download link in tutorial.)

If you dont have access to either, please email me and Ill make your icon(s) for you :)

Step 1: Download/open your image editing software with the image of your choice. Id recommend googling what youd like as a "silhouette". Im using Photoshop.

Step 2: If its possible, delete the white background. You wont be able to see it but it might make a difference when you use it as an icon.
Step 3: Crop picture leaving only a tiny bit of space around it.

Step 4: Resize to 45 Pixels in Width. Keep the ratio to the Height the same.
Step 5: Save as a PNG file onto your Desktop. This is very important. And name it "black@2x".
Step 6: Go to your Desktop and make a new folder. Name it whatever youd like the icon to be called.
Step 7: Click and Drag your PNG picture into the folder.

Step 8: Right click and Copy your file and paste it in the same folder 8 times.

Step 9: Rename them so they show as follows. This is also very important.
black
black@2x
etched
etched@2x
logo
logo@2x
logo@3x
silver
silver@2x

UPDATE 7/1/15 You may need to download "OpenSSH" from Cydia before the next step.
Step 10: Click here to install WinSCP. And click on "installation Package." Go ahead and download and install.
Step 11: Once its installed, open the program and at the top right hand corner youll click on "New".
Step 12: For Host Name type in your IP Address. (On your device > Setting > Wi-Fi> "Your Network"'s i>Scroll Down until you see IP Address)
For User Name type in "root" and for password "alpine". Click Login.
Step 13: Once youre logged in your device, go back until youre in the <root> file.

Step 14: Click on Library>then Zeppelin.
Step 15: Click and drag your logo folder into Zeppelin. Click Copy. And itll do it fast.
Step 16: Double check the Zeppelin folder to make sure its there.

Step 17: Once its there go to your device. Into Settings. Then scroll down to Zeppelin, hit "Theme", and activate your new logo! :)

It may take you a few tries to get the sizing right. It did for me. But once you get the hang of it, youll want to make so many! Have fun and good luck :)
